1921 50C Alabama MS67 NGC. Alabama celebrated its stat
1921 50C Alabama MS67 NGC. Alabama celebrated its statehood centennial in 1919, but it was not until 1920 that the Alabama Centennial Commission first requested a commemorative coin for the event. Further complications, including changes in denomination (from quarter to half) and design (from presidents to governors), delayed production until 1921. By then, the experience of the Pilgrim and Missouri commemoratives suggested that two design varieties could result in additional sales. James Earle Fraser helpfully supplied the recommendation.
While the low-mintage 2x2 variant attracts most of the attention in lower Mint State grades, the "plain" Alabama is conditionally elusive in MS66, and finer examples are extremely rare. This carefully preserved representative has soft, swirling luster beneath delicate gold-orange, blue-green, and violet patina. Heritage has not offered an Alabama commemorative of this caliber since January 2003, the only previous appearance of a Superb Gem in one of our auctions. Neither NGC nor PCGS has graded a finer example; NGC lists six Superb Gems in its Census Report, while PCGS acknowledges just one in its Population Report (3/07).
From The Cary & Cheryl Porter Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
