1921<$20> MS64 PCGS. Federal records indicate that the Philadelphia mint coined 528,500 double eagles in 1921. We do not know what became of most of these coins (most likely they were melted), but we do know that the 1921 is now one of the premier rarities in the Saint-Gaudens double eagle series. In this regard, the 1921 compares favorably to the 1920-S, although the edge goes to the P-mint issue in higher grades. Approximately half of the extant population is located at the circulated grade levels.
This Choice Uncirculated survivor is boldly impressed on the obverse with a satiny overall sheen and strong cartwheel luster effects. A few of the eagle's feathers are somewhat soft. Rich green-gold and orange-gold colors blend together over the surfaces. Several scattered abrasions are not unusual for the assigned grade, however, one diagonal mark is noted in the left obverse field to help aid for future pedigree purposes. An important bidding opportunity for either the double eagle or 20th century gold specialist. Housed in an earlier PCGS holder with a green insert. Population: 3 in 64, just 2 are finer (10/05).
From The Phillip H. Morse Collection of Saint-Gaudens Coinage.

Importan
