Unlike most of the key issues from the 1930s, the 1921, when encountered, is not guaranteed to grade Mint State, perhaps an indicator that small quantities were released at the time of issue and the majority were kept from commercial channels until the gold recall 12 years later. In fact, this issue's extant population is almost evenly divided between circulated and Mint State representatives.<BR>Both sides of this lustrous, frosty survivor are accented in delicate rose patina that is most evident in the reverse fields. A liberal amount of small contact marks are seen on the obverse, but are significantly less numerous on the reverse. The strike is typically bold and a few pinpoint areas of discoloration (perhaps from grease on the die) are located within the folds of Liberty's gown. There is a reverse die break (as struck, and not uncommon for the type) through the eagle's beak. Last year's FUN Sale featured a PCGS certified MS62 that fetched an impressive $62,100. A coin that would fit nicely into any advanced collection of certified U.S. gold. Population: 17 in 62, 8 finer (11/03).<BR><I>From a Magnificent Collection of Double Eagles.</B></I> </FONT></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><BR><A name=PricesRealized></A><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" bgColor=#000000 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%"><TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=3 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%" bgColor=#79735c><A name=PR><FONT face=arial color=#ffffff size=3><B>Previous Prices from Heritage Auctions</B> </FONT></A></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#f6f6ed><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" border=1><TBODY><TR><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Date</B></TD><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Service</B></TD><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Price</B></TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>01/11/2003</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$62,100.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>09/01/1999</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$46,000.00</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff><FONT face=arial size=1 ?>PLEASE NOTE: All prices realized reflect the final hammer price PLUS the buyer's premium in auctions that charge a buyer's premium. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. </span></font></tr></table></td></tr></table>
