It has long been obvious that most of these coins were melted. Unlike many of the semi-key issues from the 1930s, the 1921, when encountered, is not guaranteed to grade Mint State. In fact, this issue's extant population is evenly divided between circulated and Mint State grades. The reddish-gold surfaces of the currently offered example show even, if somewhat subdued, satin-like luster, with a number of small abrasions scattered over each side. The two most noticeable marks are on the right obverse field. Boldly struck overall, minor weakness is noted on Liberty's nose and bent knee, and on the eagle's head. A pair of slender die cracks (as struck) reside on the upper left reverse, and one of these bisects the eagle's beak. With a pleasing appearance and impressive technical attributes, for the assigned grade, this coin represents an important bidding opportunity for either the Saint-Gaudens double eagle or 20th century gold specialist.<BR><I>From the Holman Family Collection.</B></I> </FONT></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><BR><A name=PricesRealized></A><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" bgColor=#000000 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%"><TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=3 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%" bgColor=#79735c><A name=PR><FONT face=arial color=#ffffff size=3><B>Previous Prices from Heritage Auctions</B> </FONT></A></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#f6f6ed><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" border=1><TBODY><TR><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Date</B></TD><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Service</B></TD><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Price</B></TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>01/10/1998</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$24,150.00</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff><FONT face=arial size=1 ?>PLEASE NOTE: All prices realized reflect the final hammer price PLUS the buyer's premium in auctions that charge a buyer's premium.
