This eye-catching 1920s-1930s vintage sugar and creamer set is large in size and is handpainted with a plum design. It is marked "Made in Japan." It is trimmed in gold and is plum lovely!<p>

The mark on this pair is an H within a diamond. Both the sugar bowl and the creamer are signed by the artist, N. Hori. This set is in excellent, nearly perfect condition. There is minimal gold wear.<p>

This will make an outstanding addition to an early 20th century handpainted Japanese porcelain collection!<p>

(For a bit of history: "Made in Japan" followed the end of the use of "Nippon" to refer to porcelain made in Japan for export in 1921, when the McKinley Tariff act prohibited the import of items not "plainly marked, stamped, branded or labeled in legible English words" with the country of origin. Since Nippon was the Japanese word for Japan and "Japan" was its English equivalent, "Nippon" as a term could no longer be used, and other terms such as "Japan" or "Made in Japan" began to be used.<p>

Coming out of its isolation in trade, Japan had produced handpainted Nippon porcelain strictly for Western consumers. Because they relied on foreign experts to train Japanese porcelain artists in European designs, the frequent resemblance of handpainted Nippon porcelain to European porcelain of the 19th century became predictable. Handpainted "Japan" and "Made in Japan" porcelain pieces follow that precedent, as this sugar and creamer attest. It, too, retains the high regard that Nippon ...
