LEAD, SD. 57754
Hills area, de accessioned from Central South Dakota museum. Includes a large collection of research, books and articles on the immoral and ignorant of the history of the KKK and their presence in South Dakota. South Dakota History Volume 4 1973 by Charles Rambow indicates the first presence of the Klan in SD 1921 reaching their peek 1935 with estimated 30,000 people attending the largest convention during the tri state round up in Belle Fourche SD. Today it is difficult to believe the power held by the Klan over local and regional governments with reps at state levels and congress. Klan primarily opposed and feared the Roman Catholics believing the held to much power in communities and politics particularly in Lead and Sturgis, both towns with strong parochial schools and programs. Klan often paraded openly in full costume in many towns throughout the hills. Included is an original photo of a march in front of Duhamul Rapid City in the 1920's. Fortunately in 1927 the invisible empire began to weaken and by the 1930's the area was reed of the hooded organization. DPA holds no sympathies for the organization past or present and offers this item as a reminder and historic
