1920-S 5C MS65 NGC. The 1920-S, coming from a mintage of 9.689 million pieces, is one of the key date coins in the Buffalo nickel series. David Lange, in his The Complete Guide to Buffalo Nickels, says that "In Mint State, 1920-S is among the scarcest coins in the series. Gems are very rare." In addition to its rarity in the better grades of Mint State, the '20-S are quite weakly struck. Indeed, Lange writes that "Fully struck examples are virtually unknown. Most seen range in strike from fair all the way to awful."
The Gem presented here shows some of the characteristic weakness, especially on LIBERTY, and the bison's tail and hair. The date and braid are sharp, as is the horn and all of the peripheral elements. Delicate pastel colors cover highly lustrous surfaces that are impeccably preserved. Census: 7 in 65, 0 finer (10/07).

Coin Engraver: James E.
