1920-S 25C MS66 Full Head PCGS. An outstanding 1920-S that was sold in the February 2000 Long Beach Sale with the following description: "Taken as a whole, the Roaring Twenties witnessed some of the poorest produced coins in the history of the California branch mint. S-mint Peace Dollars, Walking Liberty Half Dollars, Standing Liberty Quarters, Mercury Dimes, and Buffalo Nickels of this era are all noteworthy rarities in pristine, boldly defined levels of preservation. Opening the decade, the 1920-S Quarter is all but nonexistent above the near-Gem Full Head grade tier. Writing in 1986, J. H. Cline estimated that fewer than 10 powerfully struck, Gem quality representatives of the issue exist in today's numismatic marketplace. Although slightly low, Cline's estimate is close to the 19 examples that NGC and PCGS report in MS 65 and MS 66. Of this total, the 6 MS 66 Full Head examples constitute the Condition Census for the issue (9/99). A lovely specimen, the present coin displays light mottled toning that hardly inhibits the intensity of its modestly frosted faces. The powerful striking pressure adequately elicits every obverse highpoint from Liberty's head to the date, although, for accuracy alone, we mention trivial incompleteness of definition over the eagle's breast. An interesting die crack is noted on the reverse about star 8, but the surfaces are pristine and devoid of post-production distractions. An often overlooked condition rarity, we encourage students of the series to take full advantage of the fleeting opportunity that this lot represents." Population: 6 in 66, 0 finer (10/02).
