1920-S[$20] MS65 PCGS.
1920-S<$20> MS65 PCGS. The 1920-S ranks as one of the rarest collectible issues in the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle series. It would probably be the fourth date on anyone's rarity ranking after the 1907 Extremely High Relief, 1921, and 1927-D. The vast majority of the 558,000 double eagles that the San Francisco Mint produced in 1920 were melted without having ever seen the light of day. While several other mintmarked issues from the 1920s have been well represented in repatriations from Europe, it seems likely that the 1920-S has never appeared on the market in quantity. A few high quality examples are known, but the number of advanced gold collectors is far greater than this limited population. While the typical 1920-S is poorly struck, the present example displays strong, although not complete definition. The texture is frosty and the luster swirls around both sides with strong intensity. There are no individually mentionable post-production distractions and the surfaces present a very pleasant combination of orange-gold and mint-green patina. A coin whose rarity and Condition Census standing is as impressive as its technical merits. This lot will not be offered in the Post Auction Bargains normally available if it does not meet the reserve. Population: 2 in 65, 1 finer (7/04).

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
