1920-S $10 MS64 PCGS.<p>No important offering of Indian Eagles would be complete without a representative of the 1920-S. Along with the 1930-S and 1933, this issue is one of the most widely recognized rarities in this series. To the untrained numismatist, the '20-S may not seem like a noteworthy date. After all, 126,500 coins were produced, a higher total than that of the 1908 No Motto, 1911-D, 1911-S, and 1913-S deliveries, to name just a few other dates in this series. However, very of these coins were actually released from the San Francisco Mint, and most were melted after the passage of the Gold Recall Act. Those coins that did survive typically grade Mint State, although some XF and AU representatives are known. The present lot offers a Choice BU representative whose surfaces are drenched in frosty luster and reddish-gold color. The strike is typical of the issue, with softness of detail noted in the center of the obverse over the TY in LIBERTY and on the reverse over the eagle's trailing leg feathers. A few scattered abrasions are seen on the obverse, most notably a group of four teardrop-shaped scrapes along the lower left border. NGC and PCGS combined have seen just four coins in MS64, with five finer (9/01).From the Peter Crist Collection. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
