1920-S $10 MS63 PCGS. Ex: Trompeter. The 1920-S is rarer than both the 1930-S and the 1933 in grades above the MS62 level of preservation. The '20-S is among the premier rarities in the entire U.S. gold coin series. Although 126,500 pieces were produced, the majority were never released into general circulation. Most survivors, therefore, are Mint State examples that were obtained directly from either the Mint or banks. There are, nonetheless, a few circulated coins known to NGC and PCGS, and Breen (1988) tells of a limited number of Uncirculated coins that emerged in Europe after 1980, as well as another small group that was found in upper New York State. Needless to say, the population of surviving 1920-S Eagles is still nowhere near large enough to satisfy collector demand, and it is always an important numismatic event when a specimen appears at auction. This impressive Eagle exhibits a satiny finish with surfaces that are smooth enough to evoke thoughts of a significantly higher grade. The striking definition is also noteworthy, being uncommonly sharp over Liberty's hair curls on the obverse and the eagle's shoulder feathers on the reverse. The color is a soft golden-rose shade, and somewhat muted luster is all that seems to keep this coin at the MS63 grade level. An important coin that will certainly find its way into a specialized collection.Ex: T. L. Comparette of the United States Mint (2/1921, at face value); John H. Clapp; Louis E.
