<B>1920-S $10 MS62 NGC.</B></I> The mintage of the 1920-S ten dollar is 126,500 pieces, certainly not an impressively low mintage for this series. However, the absolute rarity of the 1920-S points to the real use for ten dollar gold pieces as a trade medium for European and Central American banks. An interesting and somewhat lengthy passage from the Garrett-Guth reference explains in greater detail the rarity of the 1920-S:<BR><BR>"Obviously, the three-year hiatus since 1916 did little to drum up excitement for this series, and most of these entered circulation unnoticed soon after the time of issue. Europe was in disarray when these were struck; remaining banks were simply trying to survive and didn't have the ability or credit to hoard additional gold coins. As World War I came to an end in 1918, German troops returned home to devastation, and in a few years had to fight the insidious hyperinflation that wiped out any remaining savings in late 1923. Thus, survival of the 1920-S Indian Head eagle was strictly a matter of chance, and very, very few did survive in any grade."<BR><BR>Only 44 pieces have been certified by NGC and PCGS combined, minus an uncertain number of resubmissions. This low number of Mint State examples confirms this issue's status as the third rarest date in the series, trailing only the 1933 and the 1907 Rolled Rim. <BR><BR>This frosted example has even reddish patina over each side. The TY in LIBERTY are weakly impressed, as usual for this issue. Additionally, there is uniform striking weakness on the reverse on the eagle's feathers and the right (facing) leg. Magnification shows a number of small abrasions scattered over each side, but the only one worthy of individual mention is a shallow, vertical mark at the top of the eagle's tail feathers.
