This is a very nice example of a 98A 1920 rework short rifle that was the forerunner of the World War II K-98. This rifle is equipped with a Gerard marked scope with a unique single claw and post style mount. (Gerard marked scopes are found on WWI Gewehr 98 sniper rifles and were used between the World Wars by the Wiemar Republic). The scope bases are mounted on the top of the receiver and the only visible marking on top of the receiver ring is "1920". The consignor's notes state that this is an Erfurt, double dated 1918/20. The left side of the receiver ring is marked with the serial number and an Imperial eagle proof, and the right side is marked with crown over letter proof marks. The left side receiver wall is marked "Kar98". These rifles were built on the small receiver ring action with a full length one piece handguard and pistol grip stock. The bolts were bent down and had a half ball with checkering. The receiver and stock have several imperial and Erfurt proofmarks. All visible numbers match.
BBL: 24 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 8 mm
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 7534z
Condition:
Very fine as arsenal reworked. The rifle retains 95% plus blue finish with some wear on the muzzle, bolt handle and high edges. The stock is fine with scattered minor dents, dings and scratches associated with a gun of this age. The scope is very fine with some thinning on the eye piece and clear optics. Stock markings and visible markings on the rifle are clear. The action is excellent.
