1920-D<5C> MS65 PCGS. The 1920-D is a scarce coin in the higher circulated grades and in all Mint State grades. In full Gem and finer condition, no more than 60 examples have been certified by PCGS and NGC combined. Buffalo nickel specialist David Lange (2000) writes that the '20-D exhibits a general softness which is most pronounced at the bison's right hind leg and tail. The specimen offered in this lot does not fit this generalization, as both of these elements are relatively well defined. Moreover, the date and LIBERTY are bold, as is the horn, while minor softness is noted in portions of the bison's hair. Bright lustrous surfaces exhibit low intensity champagne toning with lavender peripheral accents on the obverse, and slightly deeper hues of champagne, lavender, and sky-blue coloration on the reverse. Population: 45 in 65, 1 finer (9/06).
