1920-D 25C MS68 Full Head PCGS. It is our privilege to offer again this remarkable 1920-D Quarter, last sold in our February 2000 Long Beach Sale with the description: "Among early Standing Liberty Quarters, the Denver Mint's delivery of 1920 falls into a gray area among novice collectors and specialists alike. The original mintage of 3,586,400 pieces may not be extravagant, but it is certainly well above the prized 1919-D, 1919-S, 1921, and 1923-S. Although not common, poorly struck Mint State representatives are available enough through the near-Gem grade tier to avoid significant numismatic hype. Above this respected grade level, however, boldly impressed survivors of this D-mint issue readily reveal their conditionally challenging status. A simply breathtaking Standing Liberty Quarter, it is little wonder that the present Superb Gem piece is the single finest certified example of the issue (9/99). Boldly struck, every last detail shows rich delineation that is most conspicuous on Liberty's head. The frosted faces exhibit pale iridescence that speaks volumes for this coin's originality. Orange-russet and sea-green peripheral accents on the obverse frame the lilac-gray center. The central reverse displays similar coloration, but the peripheral toning is markedly less extensive. Although countless '20-D Quarters display curious incompleteness of strike at the top of the date, this piece exhibits crisp definition that wanes only slightly over the first digit. Collectors who desire the ultimate representation of Hermon A. MacNeil's favored design need look no further than the present lot." This specimen remains the single finest 1920-D certified by either major grading service (10/02).
