1920 $20 St. Gaudens NGC MS65
1920 $20 St. Gaudens. NGC graded MS-65. A hint of gold tone. Nicely struck. A major challenge in MS65. This seemingly "nothing to see here" date is comparable in mintage to several other P-mint issues struck in the 'teens and 'twenties. It is easily found -- but only in the lower Mint State grades. The comparison turns on a dime once the Mint State 64 level is breached. Then the 1920-P takes its place and top honors with several other key dates in this fascinating (and beautiful) series of gold coins. Bright satin finish, mimicking the light, swift flutter of a golden butterfly, the field sparkles as when first issued. There are virtually no marks, which places it miles ahead of the others. "Difficult to find" would be too trite a thing to say about so remarkable a 1920-P in MS65 condition. The coin is incredibly hard to find in this grade (see the NGC census for confirmation). Something too worth pausing to study is the fact that all devices were struck with the boldness and desirable consistency of this year, that is, sharply by the dies, which then left behind finely detailed elements of design throughout. Pop 7; none finer at NGC (PCGS # 9170) .
Estimated Value $50,000 - 60,000.
