1920 $20 MS65 NGC. After a three year intermission, a 1920
1920<$20> MS65 NGC. After a three-year intermission, a limited number of Saint-Gaudens double eagles were struck in Philadelphia and San Francisco during the year. In Philadelphia, total production was limited to just 228,250 coins, while San Francisco coinage was more than double that total with 558,000 coins produced. The lower P-mint production ranks 14th lowest of all Arabic Numerals issues. This is clearly a case where mintage totals do not tell the whole story of rarity. Today, it is not difficult to locate a Mint State example of this issue, and coins grading up to MS63 grade are plentiful. Even in Choice Mint State quality, this issue is not rare. However, Gem coins are all but non-existent, and the date does not exist any finer. David Akers described this as one of the most underrated issues in the entire 20th century gold series when in Gem condition.
This example is sharply struck with pristine yellow-gold surfaces and frosty luster. Only a few tiny abrasions mar the surfaces on each side, and none of these are individually distracting. All of the design elements on both sides are fully defined, even including the individual details of the Capitol building. Critical examination reveals a few tiny orange copper spots on each side. The present opportunity is extremely important for the specialist, and should be given serious consideration. Census: 7 in 65, 0 finer (6/06).
