1919-S<25C> MS66 Full Head PCGS. The 1919-S is a long-time key to the series and is very rare and undervalued in high grade and with full head definition. As J.H. Cline stated in his third edition of Standing Liberty Quarters: "Normally the "S" mint in any given year is weak when compared to the "D." However, this is not the case in 1919. Normal weakness persists, both obverse and reverse. Again, rivets are missing from shield. Lines in shield are shallow. Gown lacks sharp details." This is a remarkably sharp strike for the issue, and as such it probably deserves the bump from MS65 to MS66 for that reason alone. However, the surfaces are also bright and lustrous with the usual S-mint sheen, and each side shows ever-deepening golden-brown toning toward the rims. The only mark we see (and a useful pedigree identifier as well) is a short horizontal mark along Liberty's jawline, but a magnifier will be required to actually single out this abrasion. Very rare, as stated, in high grades, with only two other pieces certified as MS66 by PCGS and one finer, while NGC has graded two as such with two others finer (4/05).
From The Western Hills Collection.
