1919-S<10C> MS65 Full Bands PCGS. The semi-key 1919-S Mercury dime is a coin that is difficult to find in all but the lowest grades. Uncirculated coins are scarce, while Gems, especially with Full Bands, are rare. The San Francisco Mint was even more sparing in its use of dies than the Denver Mint in 1919, averaging nearly 343,000 impressions per obverse die. This strictly Gem coin does show considerable evidence of die fatigue, namely in its softness near the rims, indicative of die erosion, and considerable die polishing lines. Examination with a glass reveals bold clash marks before Liberty's face and behind her lowest hair curls from the reverse foliage that flanks the fasces. The reverse also shows field clashing. This example is completely brilliant and boldly struck in the centers, with robustly split bands, diagonals, and vertical rods. Close examination with a loupe reveals a trivial tick each on the center bands and the two diagonals. Another delectable example for a high grade Mercury dime collection, and another interesting coin from the standpoint of numismatic history. Population: 19 in 65, 3 finer (11/05).
From The Larry Shapiro #1 All-Time Finest Mercury Dimes Full Bands Basic PCGS Registry Set.
