1919-D<25C> MS66 Full Head NGC. This is a sensational example and the date is seldom seen with a full strike. Jay Cline called this "one of the major keys of the series," and noted that "high-end Full Head pieces are very rare." Walter Breen went a step further and called full head examples "prohibitively rare."
This remarkable piece has fully brilliant and frosty luster on each side. The tops of the digits in the date are slightly weak and the third and fourth rivets in the shield, at 8 o'clock, are slightly weak, but every other detail is fully defined. Liberty's head is sharp and complete. The reverse is uncharacteristically sharp with full breast feathers on the eagle's body. It is truly a remarkable example, tied for the finest certified, with no finer pieces known at either major service. This is a very well made example and probably an early strike. Both sides exhibit fine die polishing lines, but no trace of die cracks or other defects exists.
The Denver Mint produced a large quantity of mediocre coins in 1919, and nearly every issue was characterized by poor details. From the cent to the half dollar, sharp strikes are clearly the exception. The combination of pristine surfaces and sharp strike is highly unusual, and most desirable. The connoisseur will appreciate the quality and aesthetic appeal of this impressive fully struck Gem. Census: 2 in 66, 0 finer (9/06).
