1919-D<10C> MS65 Full Bands PCGS. A phenomenally appealing and technically interesting coin, and yet another example of a difficult issue in Full Bands. According to Lange's book, the Denver Mint used 51 obverse dies to produce an average of nearly 197,000 dimes per die for this issue, compared with the Philadelphia Mint's 1919 average of about 71,000 strikes per obverse die. Not surprisingly, this coin shows several obverse die cracks under its heavy toning. One runs from the rim up through the motto; a second runs from the rim upward through the neck; and a third runs downward from left of the E in LIBERTY through Liberty's cap, hair, and face, all the way down to her neck. This coin sports vivid, original toning in shades of apple-green and sunset-orange. The strike is bold, with only a few ticks on the upper fasces. While several other examples, including some graded finer, are likely available for a price, it is highly unlikely that they will exceed this specimen, either in terms of technical detail or overall eye appeal. Population: 12 in 65, 5 finer (11/05).
From The Larry Shapiro #1 All-Time Finest Mercury Dimes Full Bands Basic PCGS Registry Set.
