1919-D 10C MS65 Full Bands NGC. Lot 6988 in our Philadelphia 2000 Signature Sale offered an MS66 Full Bands PCGS 1919-D Dime that shattered all previous auction records for this issue when it realized $218,500. Since then, we have developed new respect for the 1919-D as a strike and condition rarity. Like the 1918-D, the 1919-D is often plagued by peripheral striking incompleteness as well as bluntness of detail over the central reverse highpoint. Not only does the present Gem exhibit full separation between the central crossbands, but each is well rounded in almost all areas. The peripheries are equally well struck up with only the slightest softness noted at the tops of one or two letters. Satin textured luster shimmers over both sides with an overlay of pale apricot-gray patina and rich, multicolored, mottled shadings around the peripheries. A die crack (as struck) overlays the top of Liberty's portrait from the obverse rim after the B in LIBERTY, but we cannot locate a single bagmark that would seem to rule out an even higher grade. Close inspection with a loupe reveals evidence of metal flow (as produced) in the fields just inside the peripheral lettering. Clearly a coin that merits careful consideration among the numerous Mercury Dime specialists who will be attending the upcoming FUN convention. Population: 4 in 65 Full Bands, there are none finer at NGC (10/02). Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
