1919<50C> MS63 NGC. Ex: Richmond Collection. Among Philadelphia Mint issues, only the 1916 and 1921 possess lower productions than the 1919, of which 962,000 pieces were struck. As such, it is a desirable and elusive date as far as early Walkers are concerned. In his book The Complete Guide to Walking Liberty Half Dollars, Fox assigns an R.4 rating ("Scarce. May or may not be available at larger shows") to MS63 Walking Liberty 1919 Philadelphia coins. The surfaces of this example reveal nice luster, and are well preserved, showing only three or four minute, well concealed marks on Liberty's figure. Warm olive-tan patina with a splash or two of ice-blue color occupies each side. While not fully struck, as is the case with many early-date Walkers, the design elements display better-than-average definition. Liberty's head shows very nice detail, and the left thumb area is partially defined. Most all of the feathers show on the eagle. Indeed, some might consider this piece to be conservatively graded.
