1918-S 5C MS65 PCGS. The 1918-S is a well-known strike rarity from the teens. The reason is explained in David Lange's The Complete Guide to Buffalo Nickels: "The combination of die-set distances and worn dies produced the mushy, disappointing coins so often seen in this series." This particular coin is better impressed than most '18-S nickels with strong reverse definition and only slight softness above the knot in the Indian's braid. At first glance this piece appears brilliant, but upon closer examination the surfaces show a pale intermixture of blue and rose colors. Population: 30 in 65, 1 finer (1/08).

Coin Engraver: James E.
