1918-S 5C MS65 PCGS. Ex: ADM Collection. The 1918-S has long been recognized as one of the most challenging issues in the early Buffalo nickel series. Some of the problem is absolute rarity, as coins grading VF or better are scarce. But even when high grade pieces are found, the striking details are often soft. This is not necessarily because the striking pressure was weak, but as David Lange points out in the third edition of his book on this series: "In some instances the dies were set too far apart to make a complete impression. This was done as an economy measure to reduce wear on both the dies and press and to thus extend their useful life." This particular coin is better struck than most, but of course, it still lacks complete highpoint definition above the knot in the braid. The reverse details are exceptionally sharp over the bison's head and tail. This is also a beautifully toned coin that shows rich rose centers and a slight accent of blue around the margins. Population: 29 in 65, 1 finer (8/07).

Coin Engraver: James E.
