1918-S<5C> MS65 NGC. This impressive Gem is tied for the finest certified by NGC. The 1918-S Buffalo nickel is one of the hardest dates in the entire series to find in Gem MS65 or finer condition, despite a substantial mintage of nearly 5 million coins. Nearly every example is weakly defined, and almost the entire mintage entered circulation, where even a little wear would give the coin a middle grade circulated appearance. Those few that did survive without any evidence of circulation are still apt to grade only in the MS60 to MS63 range.
The obverse of this Gem example has light gold toning at the center, and it is encircled by rings of pale blue and light yellow toning near the border. Although the central details show evidence of design weakness, most design elements are quite nicely defined. Along the upper right border, LIBERTY is sharp and clearly separated from the rim, although magnification reveals that the letters have a vestigial appearance. The obverse has minor clash marks in the usual location and a die crack from the border at 9 o'clock to the feather tip. The reverse coloration is similar to the obverse with pale gold framed by light blue and yellow at the border, especially above the bison. Like the obverse, the central reverse details are somewhat weak, but the overall design detail is clearly sharper than usual. Census: 9 in 65, 0 finer (4/06).
