1918-S 5C MS64 PCGS. The date on this coin is exceptionally full for the issue: each digit is clear and crisp. On the other hand, the centers are a little soft. In the absence of bothersome abrasions and an excessive amount of carbon, however, the latter feature seems to be all that bars this coin from a full Gem grade. Intermingled swirls of gold and ice-blue iridescence blanket both sides, and there are also blushes of lilac tinting in select areas toward the peripheries. A rare coin in all Mint State grades, the 1918-S (4.8 million pieces produced) is particularly elusive in grades above the MS63 level. This issue is the worst struck of the three 1918-dated deliveries in the Buffalo Nickel series, and locating a high quality survivor with even average definition is a significant feat. From The BTB Collection of Buffalo Nickels.
