1918-S 50C MS65 NGC. A prized member of the Walking Liberty set, Gems of the 1918-S are hard to locate, and finer pieces are well-nigh impossible. Splendid surfaces display frosty white luster with subtle champagne toning near the peripheries. The strike is above average with Liberty's branch hand showing some details including a partial thumb. Skirt lines are typically weak, the result of improper design and not the pressure applied to this planchet by the coin press. The lines of the skirt on top of Liberty's leading leg are opposite the eagle's breast, aligning the deepest parts of the two dies. Experienced engravers understand that opposing relief is not desirable, a concept lost on artists with little engraving knowledge. Census: 34 in 65, 3 finer (6/07).

Coin Engraver: Adolph A.
