1918-S 50C MS65 NGC. Mint records indicate that 10.2 million Half Dollars were produced at the San Francisco Mint in 1918. Yet, the 1918-S is seldom offered in any Mint State grade, let alone at the MS65 level. Either the official mintage figure is incorrect (which is highly unlikely) or the '18-S was not preserved in significant numbers at the time of issue (which is most certainly the case). Strike is also a factor in explaining the high grade rarity of this early S-mint Walker. Few coins, whether they are Gems or not, display the overall sharpness of detail found on both sides of the present representative. Liberty's hand is sharp, nay, nearly full, and there is emerging definition on the eagle's trailing leg feathers. The warmly frosted surfaces are overlaid in delicate gold and champagne iridescence that yields to brilliance over the upper obverse and throughout much of the central reverse. Simply put, this coin belongs in an advanced collection. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
