1918-S 25C MS66 Full Head NGC. The fourth edition of C
1918-S 25C MS66 Full Head NGC. The fourth edition of Cline's reference on the Standing Liberty quarter series estimates that only about 3% of the issue is struck with Full Head details. While this coin is not an overdate 1918/7-S, it fascinatingly does share many, but not all, of the diagnostics of a genuine piece. Both the overdate and this 1918-S normal-date piece show clashing from the E in E PLURIBUS UNUM at Liberty's left (facing) knee. On the reverse around AME, one can clearly distinguish die polish lines and clashing from the obverse. However, no trace is seen of the diagonal clashing from the eagle's wing that turns through the first T in TRUST on the overdate. This coin undoubtedly represents an early stage of the same die that was later rehubbed in error to produce the overdate. Confirmation of this exists on both coins, in the form of a clash mark from the eagle's furled claws that has left an irregular, oval-shaped depression at Liberty's left (facing) shoulder, beneath the I of LIBERTY.
The head details on this delightful piece are nothing short of phenomenal. The earhole is bold, there is complete separation of hair from forehead all the way down the length of the hairline, and the cheek, nose, mouth, eye, and rear hair details are all crisply articulated. All but three of the shield rivets are bold. The surfaces display just a tinge of gold, but are essentially brilliant and near-flawless. This piece and the overdate would make an ideal combination purchase for any bidder sufficiently forthright to capture both examples. Census: 2 in 66 Full Head, 2 finer (4/07).
From The Encinitas Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
