1918-S 25C MS64 Full Head PCGS. Quarter production at the San Francisco Mint skyrocketed to 11 million coins in 1918, due, presumably, to increased wartime economic activity. As the high mintage figure suggests, this date is anything but rare in worn condition, and less discerning collectors should have little difficult locating a coin that grades VF-AU. Specialists, however, will have to search long and hard to find an attractive Mint State survivor, as more than 95% of the original mintage is thought to have emerged from the presses with inadequate striking definition. Not so the present near-Gem. Every feature displays noteworthy detail, including Liberty's head. The surfaces are bathed in mottled pastel tinged iridescence, and, were the luster just a trifle more vibrant, this smooth coin would probably warrant a full Gem grade. From the Dale Wilson Collection.
