Liberty rising from the waves with sword. VLTRIX AMERICA JVRIS / 1917 U.S.A. 1918. Signed by R. BAUDICHON. Reverse: Child drowning with Lusitania sinking below. LUSITANIA MAY 7 1915. Edge: Unmarked. Paris mint medals typically carry a privy mark along the edge of the medal, and if silver, state “Argent”. This medal has neither, and is clearly silver-plated bronze, 54mm, 71.26g, AU. The medal is light (about 8g) and does not carry the Paris Mint edge mark. Relief details are weak, compared to others seen. We found no reference on the web to restrikes or silver plated pieces. This piece appears “old”, and has an older label, but it is clearly not the original die-struck silver piece. These medals were popular, and it is entirely possible silver plated pieces were made.
