1918 HEBREW VETERANS WARS BADGE. A scarce bronze 1.25" medal issued by the Hebrew Veterans of the United States. Originally organized after the Civil War by Jewish vets from New York City, the fraternal group was first known as the Hebrew Union Veterans Organization. In 1917 it merged with the Hebrew Veterans of the War With Spain, and in 1913 changed its name to Hebrew Veterans of the wars of the Republic. In 1923, the name "Hebrew" was dropped and replaced by "Jewish" and, in 1929, the name was changed again to the Jewish War Veterans. An early medal from this organization, and seldom encountered.
