1918-D<50C> MS65 PCGS. This early issue from the Denver Mint is an important condition rarity among early Walkers. Nearly all of the 3,853,040 half dollars produced entered circulation. Gem examples are seldom encountered. PCGS has certified 25 examples in MS65, with only three examples graded higher than the present coin (11/05). Strike quality was also a problem at the Denver Mint in this last year of World War I, as the facility apparently had a policy of lowering the strike pressure to extend die life. The example here offered, although a bit soft on the skirt lines and the eagle's left leg, has pleasantly well struck details elsewhere. Ebullient mint luster radiates from the brilliant, mostly untoned surfaces, with some tiny dark toning spots on both sides seen only under magnification. There is a hint of yellow-orange near the rising sun toward which Liberty confidently strides, while the reverse has a touch of copper and indigo near the motto. A few grade-limiting marks on Liberty's head and right arm are also noticeable only with a glass. Absolutely appealing, and virtually unobtainable finer.
