This is not a particularly large mintage for the Walking Liberty Half Dollar (especially considering that 1918 is a war year), but the striking quality for this issue did not benefit from this fact. It seems likely that the coinage staff in Denver purposely spaced the dies too far apart in an effort to increase time spent in the press. While this may have helped with production needs at the time, the ultimate result as far as collectors are concerned is a plethora of poorly struck coins. What's more, the '18-D does not appear to have been preserved in significant numbers at the time, and high quality Mint State coins of any striking quality are difficult to come by in today's market. As a Gem, the 1918-D is more difficult to obtain than the lower mintage 1917-S Obverse.<BR>A gorgeous Walker irrespective of date, both sides are peripherally toned in rich crimson-orange hues with more delicate jade-green and lilac-gray iridescence toward the centers. There are no mentionable abrasions, and the luster is full from rim to rim. Typically struck for the issue with some softness of detail over Liberty's head and right (facing) hand and the eagle's trailing leg feathers. Population: 10 in 65, with a mere three finer (2/03). </FONT></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><BR><A name=PricesRealized></A><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" bgColor=#000000 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%"><TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=3 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%" bgColor=#79735c><A name=PR><FONT face=arial color=#ffffff size=3><B>Previous Prices from Heritage Auctions</B> </FONT></A></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#f6f6ed><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" border=1><TBODY><TR><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Date</B></TD><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Service</B></TD><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Price</B></TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>04/27/2002</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$20,700.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>02/11/2000</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$14,950.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>01/01/1999</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$19,800.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>04/22/1994</B></TD><TD width="33%">NGC</TD><TD width="33%">$7,700.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>03/01/2000</B></TD><TD width="33%">NGC</TD><TD width="33%">$6,900.00</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff><FONT face=arial size=1 ?>PLEASE NOTE: All prices realized reflect the final hammer price PLUS the buyer's premium in auctions that charge a buyer's premium.
