1918-D<50C> MS64 PCGS. The 1918-D is a scarce issue among early Walkers because nearly all of the emission entered circulation and stayed there for decades. High-grade examples such as this piece are elusive, and finer examples are infrequently encountered. PCGS has certified just 28 specimens in higher grade (9/06). Good strikes are a problem, apparently because the Denver Mint had a policy of reducing striking pressure to increase die life. The present example, while somewhat soft on the skirt lines and the eagle's left (facing) leg, exhibits a better-than-average strike elsewhere. Liberty's left thumb, the adjacent branches, and Liberty's head display relatively strong definition. The lustrous surfaces display a couple of minute, grade-defining marks on Liberty's cheek, neck, and midsection, and are bathed in golden-gray patina.
