1918-D<50C> MS64 PCGS. Nearly all of the 3,853,040 Half Dollars produced by the Denver Mint in 1918 entered the channels of commerce and stayed there for decades. The 1918-D is thus a scarcer issue among early Walkers. High grade examples in particular, such as this piece, are very elusive and are infrequently encountered any finer. In fact, PCGS has certified just 28 specimens in higher grade (8/05). Moreover, quality strikes are a problem, apparently because the Denver Mint had a policy of reducing the striking pressure to increase die life. The example offered here, while somewhat soft on the skirt lines and on the eagle's left leg, exhibits a better than average strike on other portions of the design elements. The lustrous surfaces display just a couple of minute, grade-defining marks on Liberty's cheek and midsection, and are bathed in golden-gray patina.
