Apparently, the staff in Denver rushed to get these coins into circulation, and their workmanship was sloppy at best. Mint State survivors are not particularly scarce in an absolute sense, but most display indistinct definition over the central reverse crossbands. In fact, at the MS65 Full Bands grade level, the 1918-D is the premier rarity among D-mint issues in this long-lived and widely collected series. This impressive and obviously important Gem is not only fully impressed over the all-important crossbands, but the peripheral devices are sharply detailed throughout. Both sides exhibit a warm, matte-like texture that is veiled in original dappled pastel shades. The underlying mint luster is strong, and the surfaces are expectantly free of distracting abrasions of any kind. An interesting die crack (as struck) extends from the upper left reverse rim, just left of the S in STATES, and into the field area below. Another notable "as struck" item, also on the reverse, is an apparent die clash mark, just above the D in DIME. Both of these mint-made features could be useful in verifying the coin's pedigree. Population: 15 in 65, 2 finer (4/03).<BR><I>From the Stephen and Dianne Stokely Collection.</B></I> </FONT></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><BR><A name=PricesRealized></A><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" bgColor=#000000 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%"><TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=3 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%" bgColor=#79735c><A name=PR><FONT face=arial color=#ffffff size=3><B>Previous Prices from Heritage Auctions</B> </FONT></A></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#f6f6ed><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" border=1><TBODY><TR><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Date</B></TD><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Service</B></TD><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Price</B></TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>01/12/2002</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$19,550.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>04/05/2001</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$28,750.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>03/04/1995</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$11,275.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>03/28/2000</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$41,000.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>09/01/1999</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$42,550.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>03/01/2003</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$17,825.00</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff><FONT face=arial size=1 ?>PLEASE NOTE: All prices realized reflect the final hammer price PLUS the buyer's premium in auctions that charge a buyer's premium.
