1918-D 10C MS65 Full Bands NGC. Even though more than 22 million pieces were struck, the 1918-D is generally acknowledged today as the most challenging strike rarity in the Mercury dime series, probably as a result of hurried wartime conditions. Gems are very elusive and plagued by peripheral weakness, which is accompanied by indistinct center bands on all but a few of the Uncirculated population. The current specimen is a notable exception. Its design elements are sharply struck throughout, not just on the bands. Excellent definition is seen in the peripheral lettering (save for minor softness on the base of E in ONE), on the numerals of the date, and on the mintmark. The surfaces have a grainy-textured appearance with soft, glowing luster, and are nearly untoned, except for a whisper of gold color in limited areas. There are no obvious or distracting blemishes on either side of this exceptional coin. Census: 7 in 65, 1 finer (10/07).

Coin Engraver: Adolph A.
