<B>1918/7-S 25C MS64 Full Head NGC.</B></I> Standing Liberty quarter pundit and commentator J.H. Cline, who recently issued his fourth edition of <I>Standing Liberty Quarters,</B></I> fittingly ranks the 1918/7-S quarter the No. 1 issue in the series in terms of both price and rarity, commenting that "A few were struck with Full Heads; about 12 pieces." This is, of course, out of the presumably small but unknown number of overdate coins that were struck. Cline comments that the overdate was created by the recutting of a 1917 die, but other commentators believe the creation was the result of a dual-hubbing error.<BR> The first appearance of the overdate quarter was in a 1937 Barney Bluestone sale, where the coin was thought to be unique. It is hard to believe that so obvious a naked-eye overdate escaped attention for nearly 20 years, but such appears to be the case. Because the overdate quarter was discovered so long after its creation, few pieces exist in Mint State, and of course even fewer with Full Head details. Authentication of this issue is mandatory, but fortunately there are some key diagnostics of genuine coins. The 7 underdigit has a slight curve, and it fills the right side of the upper loop and the middle of the lower loop of the 8. A clash from the E in the reverse motto at Liberty's right knee. There is also a die clash from the eagle's wing feather visible on the obverse, running diagonally through the first T in TRUST and into the rectangle below. The step under Liberty's right (facing) foot is missing, and usually her toes are as well. Clash marks and die polish marks also show on the reverse in the area of AME.<BR> This coin is basically brilliant, with just the slightest blush of silver-gold on each side. Three clear olive sprigs show on Liberty's headdress, and there is a clear separation between the hair and forehead. For the MS64 grade, the coin is remarkable free of abrasions of any size, large or small.
