1918/7-S 25C MS63 NGC. As with many of the more important Mint errors of the 20th century, the 1918/7-S was created by the rushed atmosphere of the wartime Engraving Department in Philadelphia. In this case, the obverse die in question received its first blow from a 1917-dated hub. After the annealing process, however, the die received the second blow from a 1918-dated hub. With an S mintmark affixed, the die was shipped west for use by the San Francisco Mint. There is not way for us (or anyone else, for that matter) to discern exactly how many of the 11 million Stranding Liberty Quarters produced in the San Francisco Mint during 1918 were delivered with this overdated obverse. Judging by the number of coins extant, the total must have been small. Furthermore, the fact that the error escaped the usually keen eyes of numismatists for 19 years meant that most collectors had to resort to setting aside a well worn representative. Mint State examples remain rare, and they are among the most widely coveted rarities in the Standing Liberty Quarter series. The coin in this lot displays a bright, untoned sheen. Both sides are pleasingly lustrous for the assigned grade with a satiny-to-softly frosted texture. The strike is a little soft over the highpoints, as it is on most high grade survivors of this error, but the eye appeal benefits even further from a noteworthy lack of singularly distracting abrasions. A Standing Liberty Quarter that is earmarked for inclusion in an advanced collection. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. On occasion eBay live bid software cannot keep up with the pace of the auctions where 4-5 lots per minute can hammer down, so we recommend that you place a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
