1918/7-S 25C AU58 PCGS. This "just miss" coin represents an excellent value in two ways. First, the head detail is strong, but not quite complete. Second, there is just the slightest friction that keeps this coin from a full Mint State classification. These two factors give this coin the appearance of a much finer piece at a fraction of the price. Overdate quarters are generally not available in high grades as the underdigit was not seen and reported until 20 years after striking. By that time most examples of this die pairing had slipped into circulation. This coin must have been found early or set aside between 1918 and 1937 as a regular S-mint quarter. The surfaces are originally toned with most of each side a light gray-olive with deeper russet toning around the peripheral devices. Approximately half of the three sprigs in Liberty's hair show, but as almost always seen, the torso of Liberty and the eagle's breast are weakly defined. Extremely rare in all grades, the 1918/7-S is seldom offered in near-Mint condition and this pleasing coin is sure to be avidly sought after by specialists.
