1918/7-S 25C AU55 PCGS. Breen-4235, Cline-5130, FS-101 (formerly FS-008.5). Only 45 examples of this legendary rarity have been assigned a grade of AU55 by PCGS (7/07). Furthermore, this issue is the rarest in the entire Standing Liberty quarter series in grades above AU. The overwhelming majority of survivors are well circulated for the simple reason that the variety was not recognized by numismatists until 1937, according to Breen (1988). By then most of the 1918/7-S quarters struck had seen much service in commerce and, ostensibly, sheer luck accounts for the handful of Uncirculated examples that exist today. In light of this fact, ownership of an AU specimen is a compromise met with much gratification by most collectors. But not all AU coins possess the same aesthetic qualities; some are special. The current coin, while not the finest example graded by PCGS, offers the bonus of being refreshingly original. Pleasing amber-gold toning delicately blankets both sides, with a respectable amount of luster remaining throughout. A bit weakly struck, as usual. The only mark of note is a diagonal and located above TRV of TRVST.

Coin Engraver: Hermon A.
