<B>1918/7-D 5C MS64 PCGS.</B></I> FS-016.5. The hurried conditions created by increased wartime demand for circulating coinage prompted the Engraving Department at the Philadelphia Mint to prepare a 1917-dated Buffalo nickel die in the final months of that year for 1918 production. A single obverse die overpunched with an 8 was shipped to the Denver branch mint and an unknown, but relatively small number of the 8.3 million nickels produced at Denver in 1918 were impressed from this 1918/7 obverse. Discovery of this overdate was not published until 1931 and by that time most examples were extensively circulated. Consequently, the survival of any Uncirculated 1918/7-D nickel is little more than a random stroke of good fortune.<BR> This exceptional overdate Buffalo appears to have been struck from an early state of the dies, with hardly a trace of the developing die crack in front of the Native American's braid. The underdigit is boldly separated from the overpunched 8 across the top of the digits and across the loops. Doubling of both the 9 and the 8 is also clearly evident. The overall strike is very well executed and each side is accented by crescents of orange-gold toning. Hints of ice-blue blue patina are seen throughout. A small spot of carbon on the neck is perhaps all that separates this lovely overdate Buffalo from Gem status. Few design types in United States numismatics hold the widespread fascination of the Buffalo nickel series and the importance of its undisputed key in nearly unimprovable condition cannot be overstated.
