1918/7-D 5C MS63 PCGS. In addition to the actual overdate, there are two features that can help attribute and authenticate a 1918/7-D Buffalo Nickel: 1. A die crack (as struck) is evident in the center of the obverse from the Indian's hair above the right side of the knot that bids the braid. 2. The pattern of die erosion is such that the designer's initial F is distorted to the shape of a P.The present example displays both of these features, the former despite striking incompleteness that has left the centers (as well as a few peripheral areas) a little indistinct. Of course, the 7 underdigit is readily evident, particularly under a loupe, and the surfaces are rather well preserved for a Nickel at the MS63 level. We do, however, note some scattered carbon flecks, but the outward appearance is one of medium gray toning and champagne-apricot undertones. This overdate was created at the Philadelphia Mint during production of working dies dated both 1917 and 1918. Given the rushed atmosphere of the wartime Mint, it is not difficult to imagine how someone in the Engraving Department mixed up a 1917-dated working hub with another dated 1918 while sinking one of the working dies. After receiving an impression from a 1917-dated hub, this die was accidentally impressed by a hub dated 1918. Shipped west to the Denver Mint, the die then proceeded to deliver an unknown number of 1918/7-D Nickels. Since its discovery in 1931, this overdate has been among the most popular varieties in the entire Buffalo Nickel series of 1913-1938. Collectors have discovered precious few examples, and Mint State representatives are, and always have been rare. From the BTB Collection of Buffalo Nickels.
