1918/7-D<5C> MS61 NGC. The 1918/7-D overdate nickel is one of the most popular rarities among all of 20th-century American coinage. It was not discovered and recognized for several years, until brought to light by Barney Bluestone, a Syracuse, New York dealer in 1931, which helps to account for the paucity of Mint State specimens. Walter Breen, in his Encyclopedia of U.S. and Colonial Coins, speculates on its origin. "Because all dies of this design were completely hubbed except for mintmarks, varieties come from hubbing accidents or mintmark repunching or overpunching... During the fall of 1917, when (under emergency wartime conditions) working dies were simultaneously being prepared in unusual haste for both 1917 and 1918, one working obverse was returned to the wrong hubbing press after being softened between blows from the hub, thus receiving entries from hubs of both years."
David Lange, in his Complete Guide to Buffalo Nickels, notes that the '18/17-D nickel is most often seen in VG to Fine grades, but that higher grades are rare. He assigns XF-AU coins an R.5 rarity rating ("only a few will be available in a year's time", an R.6 ("seldom available") to lower-grade Mint State pieces, and R.7 ("4 to 10 pieces known") and R.8 ("fewer than 4 pieces known") to MS64 and MS65 specimens, respectively. About 75 Uncirculated examples have been certified by NGC and PCGS (3/06), but this doubtless includes several resubmissions. We have, to date, tracked only 26 appearances of Mint State coins in major public sales over the past 15 years or so.
On the present example, soft luster peeks through medium-intensity grayish-blue patination that is accented with whispers of bright gold-beige clinging precariously to the edges of the design elements. The motifs are generally well impressed, though the hair on the bison's head is weak. The overdate shows clearly, as does the bison's horn and tail and the peripheral elements.
The collector who is seri

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. This lot is being auctioned in conjunction with a live floor auction by Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers.
