1918/7-D<5C> AU58 NGC. The history of numismatics is filled with stories of treasures found in attics, basements, closets, and other unlikely places. On March 25, 2006, another tale began. A resident of Los Banos, California, brought a small bag of coins to Thoreson Numismatics. The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, said he found a plastic bag of coins in an old trunk while he was sorting through his parents' belongings. Most were common, but one was a spectacular 1918/7-D nickel, one of the three most sought-after varieties in the Buffalo nickel series. The story (as distributed by Knight/Ridder Tribune News Service) appeared in California newspapers, and an article appeared on page 3 of the May 22, 2006 issue of Coin World.
This example is the optimal grade for Buffalo nickel collectors, providing the eye appeal and technical qualities of a full Mint State specimen, yet saving considerable money. The overdate is bold, and the diagnostic misshapen designer's initial is plain. Both sides show the usual weakness often seen on these coins, with a trace of wear also visible on the highpoints. The surfaces have virtually full satiny luster and light champagne toning, providing excellent eye appeal. A tiny scrape between IB and the Indian's brow is the only significant defect. Otherwise, the surfaces are remarkably clean. In addition to prominent overdate features, slight machine doubling of the date and LIBERTY are also visible. This coin, associated with a wonderful tale of discovery, is sure to inspire spirited bidding. Census: 20 in 58, 29 finer (7/06).
