1918/7-D 5C AU55 PCGS
1918/7-D 5C AU55 PCGS. Among the most popular and rarest of the Buffalo nickel varieties, the 1918/7-D bears a close kinship with the 1918/7-S quarter and the 1942/1 (P and D) dime errors. All were dual-hub errors produced in a wartime rush to produce minor coinage to stimulate the economy. The 1918/7-D nickel is second only to the 1916 Doubled Die Buffalo in rarity. Most examples encountered grade only Very Good, a function of their discovery a dozen or more years after they were produced.
This incredible, high grade example boasts still-lustrous grayish-gold surfaces on each side that are minimally abraded. The obverse is an early die state, with only a trace of the normally small, diagnostic die crack that runs onto the Indian's cheek from near the braid. The misshapen designer's initial F looks like a P on this variety, also diagnostic, and both the horizontal crossbar and diagonal downstroke of the 7 are bold and complete under the 8. The reverse boasts a full horn and is lightly rotated (20 degrees) counterclockwise.

Coin Engraver: James E.
