1918/7-D<5C> AU53 PCGS. FS-016.5. One of the rarest and most difficult varieties to find in any grade, this coin will certainly attract attention. The overdate feature is quite sharp, with the underlying 7 clearly defined beneath the 8. Further die diagnostics are noted, there is a short die crack located just above the ribbon knot holding the Chief's braid, which extends from the braid to his jaw. On later die states this crack extends nearly to the Chief's mouth. The obverse die also shows rather extensive wear in the fields, and these areas show a fine fingerprint like structure from the stresses of coinage. Toned with light silvery-gray at the centers, a bit darker toward the rim. Excellent surfaces which show minimal signs of wear and no disturbances from brief circulation.
It is apparent that the outbreak of World War I in America distracted the mints, the 1917 hubs were accidentally used to make 1918 dies on both the 1918/7-S Standing Liberty quarter and the 1918/7-D Buffalo nickel. Prominent overdates would again appear during the next World War, in the 1942/1 P and D Mercury dimes and the 1943/2 Jefferson nickel. These facts would suggest a lack of quality control, or perhaps less seasoned personal performing the important task of die preparation during the war years. The present coin is certainly a highly desirable example of this coveted and rare overdate issue. Population: 5 in 53, 76 finer (10/05).
