1918 50C Lincoln MS68 NGC. The design of the Lincoln (or Illinois Statehood) half dollar is the work of two important Mint artists, one near the end of his career, the other just beginning. George T. Morgan, only recently appointed Chief Engraver after the death of Charles Barber, crafted the obverse after a bust by Andrew O'Connor. John R. Sinnock, then an assistant engraver, handled the reverse, a tasteful adaptation of the State Seal of Illinois. It was the first American silver commemorative issued since the Panama-Pacific coins of 1915.
When Heritage last offered this piece in July 2002, the description began: "This is the most visually impressive Lincoln commemorative that this cataloger has seen. Mottled sprays of orange-russet and olive iridescence have gathered around irregular swirls of near-brilliance in the centers. The otherwise rich mint frost thins to pleasing brightness in the fields." The obverse deserves special notice, particularly the cheek, which is utterly devoid of the flaws that so often appear there, even on Gems. This piece remains one of the best-preserved and most appealing examples of this first statehood centennial issue. Census: 2 in 68, 1 in 68 S, none numerically finer (3/07).
From The Cary & Cheryl Porter Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
